How to Find Scripture Materials in the
E.L. Doheny Library

Books
In the online catalog, do a subject search, using this format:

Bible, Testament, Book. For example, for a search on Mark’s gospel, you would enter: Bible N.T. Mark. To retrieve books on the Prophets, the subject heading is: Bible O.T. Prophets. In other words, start with the general heading (Bible), then work your way down to the more specific.

Note:  Some of the titles especially useful for exegesis have been shelved together in the reference room of the Theology Library.

The scripture section is shelved as follows:

If you need an article in a journal to which the library does not subscribe, fill out an ILL request form.

The most exhaustive index and bibliography for Biblical Studies is the Elenchus of Biblica in the reference collection (BS 1171.2 E63). It is published by the Vatican and is a polyglot of major languages. It is arranged systematically and has a very detailed index in Latin. All references in the index are to item numbers in the main body of the work. The Elenchus for the years 1997 - 2001 is on CD and may be accessed under "local databases."
